How the process treats your file

Dye sublimation prints a mirrored image in dye ink on transfer paper. A heat press then turns the dye to gas and fixes it in polyester or in a polymer coating. Before any DPI rule applies, the file runs into four hard limits.

There is no white ink. Sawgrass says a VersiFlex blank must be light “because the system does not have a white ink”, and Printful says white “can’t be printed on all-over print products”.

The image is reversed somewhere upstream, and who does it varies. Printful’s mug line prints it “in reverse (mirrored)”; Sawgrass Print Utility mirrors by default.

The substrate decides the colour. Sawgrass names “polycotton (65/35)” as the lowest blend for its Sublijet UHD sublimation ink, and no maker read here publishes a stricter figure.

Placement is loose: Printful allows a shift of up to 2 inches, Printify 0.5 in. The platforms also disagree on colour space and on the pixel size of their own 11 oz-class mug blanks. Most “wrong colour” faults in the sources are press faults, and the one page that names ghosting puts it in the press too. Only the white, the profile, the bleed and the resolution belong to the file.

What the printers specify

No shared mug template exists: build to the printing platform, and read Redbubble’s figures as minimums.

  • Redbubble (platform): pixel minimum, capacity not stated: “Standard Mug - 2700 × 1120 pixels Tall Mug - 2700 × 1624 pixels” — Redbubble: Dimensions & Format
  • Redbubble (platform), other hard goods: “Mouse Pads 2559 × 2165 pixels”, “Desk Mats 8268 × 4331 pixels”, “Coasters 1860 × 1860 pixels” — Redbubble: Dimensions & Format
  • Printify (platform): “Design your art files at 2475 × 1155 pixels for a standard 11oz canvas.” (marketing article, not a per-provider template; Printify mugs come from several print providers) — Printify: Designing POD mugs
  • Gelato (platform): printable area “White 11oz Ceramic Mug 200x96mm” and “White 15oz Ceramic Mug 213x103mm” — Gelato: Mug printable area
  • Cloudprinter (platform): “Mug ceramic: 200 x 88 mm (7.874 x 3.465 in)” — Cloudprinter: Mug
  • Fourthwall (platform): no pixel size on the page; “size a full wrap-around mug design to the print area the product designer shows for the largest mug you sell, at 300 DPI.” and “The 20 oz mug has the widest wrap-around print area.” — Fourthwall: Mug design
  • Printful (platform): per-mug pixel sizes not stated in the help centre; “Our mug templates support up to 300 DPI.” — Printful: 150 vs 300 DPI
  • ChromaLuxe (maker, hard panels): not stated on the public FAQ; the remaining FAQs sit behind a customer-portal login — ChromaLuxe: FAQs

Resolution at print size

Unknown printer: deliver 300 ppi at final size (Sawgrass); the 120-150 figures apply to large textiles (Printify).

  • Printful (platform): a minimum of 150 DPI, and 300 DPI “if your design includes fine lines, small details, or text” on All-Over Synthetic — Printful: 150 vs 300 DPI
  • Printify (platform): 300 DPI recommended for JPEG/PNG; for leggings, blankets or tapestries “the required resolution is 120-150 DPI” — Printify: Print file requirements
  • Printify (platform): “If you have a low-resolution design that you want to use, we’ll automatically enhance the quality of the print file before sending the order to production so that it’s more suitable for printing”, with “limitations to the level of improvement that can be achieved”; the same page adds “Low-quality designs with artificially increased resolution won’t be automatically enhanced as they can’t be detected by the enhancement tool” — Printify: High-quality design file
  • Redbubble (platform): “DPI and PPI don’t affect your final uploaded image.” The pixel minimums above are what count — Redbubble: Dimensions & Format
  • Fourthwall (platform): “At least 300 dots per inch (DPI) at print size.” — Fourthwall: Mug design
  • Cloudprinter (platform): “Set 300 DPI resolution” — Cloudprinter: Mug
  • Sawgrass (maker/RIP): “We also recommend working with a Resolution of 300 Pixels/Inch.” — Sawgrass: Photoshop, Windows
  • Sawgrass (maker/RIP), printer output, not the file: High Speed 300 dpi, High Quality 600 dpi, Advanced Photo 1200 dpi, UltraFine up to 4800 dpi — Sawgrass: Print Utility settings
  • Epson (maker), printer output, not a file rule: F570 “Prints at resolutions up to 2400 dpi” — Epson: F570 guide (PDF)
  • Gelato (platform): not stated; the article defines DPI and sets no number — Gelato: About image quality

File size limits

Large AOP panels hit the platform cap before a resolution problem; check pixels first.

File format

PNG and JPEG work everywhere except Cloudprinter, which asks for PDF/X-4.

Colour mode and embedded profile

For an upload, sRGB IEC61966-2.1 is the safe default; maker and RIP pages describe the operator’s own print path.

  • Printful (platform): upload in “sRGB IEC61966-2.1”; avoid Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB, which “can cause unexpected color shifts” — Printful: RGB or CMYK
  • Printify (platform): the system works in RGB and converts CMYK uploads, so “the colors might shift significantly”; “Create your design in RGB color mode” — Printify: Colour profile
  • Redbubble (platform): design in CMYK, “convert the finished work into the RGB color profile before uploading” — Redbubble: Dimensions & Format; “We highly recommend designing in CMYK” — Redbubble: Printing digital designs
  • Fourthwall (platform): “Color mode. sRGB.” “The printing software converts to CMYK automatically, so don’t convert it yourself.” — Fourthwall: Mug design
  • Cloudprinter (platform): “Choose CMYK or RGB colour model” — Cloudprinter: Mug
  • Sawgrass (maker/RIP), Windows: working space and file profile “sRGB IEC61966-2.1”; print dialog “Printer Manages Colors” — Sawgrass: Photoshop, Windows
  • Sawgrass (maker/RIP), macOS: “Working Space RGB: Adobe RGB (1998)”; print dialog “Printer Manages Colors” — Sawgrass: Photoshop, macOS
  • Sawgrass (maker/RIP): use RGB; some CMYK colours fail “as the Sawgrass Print Utility profiles are in RGB” — Sawgrass: Wrong colours
  • Epson (maker): with driver colour management off, “An ICC profile is required”; media types include “DS Transfer General Purpose/Textile” and “DS Transfer General Purpose/Rigid” — Epson: F570 guide (PDF)
  • Mimaki (maker/RIP): profiles are per printer, ink and paper, e.g. “Generic Transfer Paper_nr” for TS100, TS55, TS300P with Sublimation610 and 410 inks — Mimaki: Device profile
  • Wasatch (RIP): “it’s hard to make color profiles that will work for every situation”, naming press temperature, fabric and press time — Wasatch: Dye sublimation

Transparency and alpha

Transparent areas take the colour of whatever sits under the print.

  • Printful (platform): if the design does not fill the area, “use a transparent background and save it as a PNG to avoid white borders” — Printful: What is AOP
  • Printful (platform): white or transparent elements “can end up being the color of the fabric” when darker layers sit underneath; it suggests not using them on AOP — Printful: Printing disclaimers
  • Fourthwall (platform): “A transparent PNG prevents a white or colored box from printing around your design.” — Fourthwall: Mug design
  • Printify (platform, DTG and AOP): drop shadows, fades and other semi-transparent elements “can look whitish, grainy, faded, or discolored”, especially on bright or dark garments — Printify: Print vs design

White handling, coloured blanks and cotton

White in the file prints as the blank, so only a white or light blank shows the file as drawn.

  • Sawgrass (maker), VersiFlex page: no white ink, so fabrics must be “in the white, light and bright range” — Sawgrass: VersiFlex products
  • Sawgrass (maker), Siser EasySubli ink on transfer paper: “For sublimation you will want to press onto white or light coloured hard or soft substrates.” — Sawgrass: Ink sets
  • Sawgrass (maker): on a grey t-shirt, “your colors will be impacted by the shirt color” — Sawgrass: Colour troubleshooting
  • Sawgrass (maker), hard goods: “Sublimation needs a polymer coating on the surface.” — Sawgrass: Coated or uncoated
  • Printify (platform): AOP base is white and the ink “doesn’t fully penetrate”, so colours look lighter — Printify: Print vs design; pitch-black “may sometimes translate to a gray/charcoal gray tone” — Printify: AOP limitations
  • Printful (platform): dark colours lighten when the fabric stretches, and white base fabric “may show through slightly at the seams and folds” — Printful: Printing disclaimers
  • Printful (platform), All-Over Cotton: “Unlike sublimation, the design is printed directly onto cotton fabric with water-based pigment inks.” — Printful: All-over printing
  • Sawgrass (maker), cotton: VersiFlex on cotton uses VersiFlex paper and “smooth, tightly woven, 100% cotton fabrics” so the film can bond — Sawgrass: VersiFlex on cotton

Do you mirror sublimation images?

Upload a platform file the right way round: the only documented reversal is Printful’s mug line, in production, and no platform asks for a mirrored upload.

Minimum line and text size

No source gives a sublimation-wide point minimum; use 300 ppi when the design carries text or fine lines (Printful).

Bleed and safe zone

Cover the full template, keep text inside the safe line, and add 2 mm top and bottom bleed for Gelato’s 11 oz mug (Gelato).

Wall decor splits on bleed too, cut to trim or printed to exact size: see Wall decor: Bleed and safe zone.

Placement tolerance

Plan for the larger number when Printful prints.

Polyester content

No maker read here publishes a polyester floor; 65/35 is a blend Sawgrass names for one ink (Sawgrass).

  • Sawgrass (maker), Sublijet UHD ink only: “Works best with white 100% polyester, polycotton (65/35) or hard substrates.” — Sawgrass: Ink sets
  • Sawgrass (maker): “a high polyester count is important” (no figure) — Sawgrass: Colour troubleshooting
  • Printful (platform), its own fabrics, not a minimum: AOP shirts “93% polyester, 7% elastane” from 2026-10-12; leggings and swim “78% polyester, 22% elastane” from 2026-09-14 — Printful: 2026 AOP fabric change

Ink limits, gradients and inks used

Fades are fine on sublimation; no maker publishes a total-ink limit.

  • Redbubble (platform): sublimation column reads “Ok” for black, white and colour fading to nothing and colour to colour; DTG is “Tricky” for white and colour fades to nothing — Redbubble: Printing digital designs
  • Printful (platform): “150 DPI is usually sufficient for simple shapes, large elements, or color gradients.” — Printful: 150 vs 300 DPI
  • Sawgrass (maker): wrong settings can mean “too much ink being put down on the paper”; no number — Sawgrass: Wrong colours
  • Mimaki (maker/RIP): “nr” profiles “are designed to reduce noise such as black spots”; no ink limit — Mimaki: Device profile
  • Printful (platform): mugs printed with Sawgrass SubliJet HD; All-Over Synthetic with Mimaki Sb411, SubliJet HD and MYSUBLI-E — Printful: Inks used

RIP, room and transfer paper (hard goods)

On photographic hard panels the RIP matters as much as the file; paper makers publish no file rules.

  • ChromaLuxe (maker): two supported RIPs (Wasatch SoftRIP, ErgoSoft RIP); of Epson Edge RIP, “we don’t recommend using it for high-quality images on ChromaLuxe” — ChromaLuxe: RIP applications
  • ChromaLuxe (maker): hard substrates need the right dot size, ink system, paper, temperature and pressure — ChromaLuxe: Textile vs hard substrate
  • ChromaLuxe (maker), room, not file: humidity “between 40% and 60% (50% is optimum)” — ChromaLuxe: Sublimation factors
  • Coldenhove (maker, paper): not stated on the homepage — Coldenhove
  • Beaver Paper (maker, paper): not stated; the homepage’s only documents are two “Statement of Principle” PDFs — Beaver Paper

Where the sources disagree

Sawgrass’s macOS Photoshop guide names Adobe RGB (1998) while its own preset name, its Notice and the Windows twin name sRGB; Printful advises against Adobe RGB uploads

The macOS guide says “Working Space RGB: Adobe RGB (1998)” (Sawgrass macOS), yet the same page calls its preset “Sawgrass_sRGB” and tells the operator to “Assign or Convert to the working space, sRGB IEC61966-2.1”. The Windows twin says sRGB IEC61966-2.1 throughout (Sawgrass Windows). Printful says to avoid Adobe RGB uploads (Printful).

On the floor: the macOS page reads like an editing error. A Mac operator who follows it tags files Adobe RGB, the kind Printful says causes shifts.

Design in CMYK (Redbubble) or design in RGB and only preview CMYK (Printify)

Redbubble says “design your work in the CMYK color profile” and convert to RGB before upload (Redbubble). Printify says “Create your design in RGB color mode”, previews in CMYK, then “Undo the color mode changes” (Printify).

On the floor: a design built in CMYK has already lost the colours outside CMYK before the RIP sees it (Printful), and Sawgrass’s own profiles are RGB (Sawgrass). A seller listing on both platforms gets two opposite instructions for one master.

Placement tolerance: 2 inches or 0.5 inch

Printful: a design “may shift slightly during printing, up to 2 inches in any direction” (Printful). Printify: “no more than 0.5″ or 1.27 cm in most cases” (Printify).

On the floor: a factor of four. A logo 1 inch off target is within Printful’s tolerance and outside Printify’s (Printful, Printify).

Sublimation mug template size: four platforms, four aspect ratios for an 11 oz-class mug file

Redbubble’s “Standard Mug” is 2700 × 1120 px, a minimum with no capacity stated (Redbubble). Printify’s Knowledge Hub gives 2475 × 1155 px (Printify). Gelato gives 200x96mm plus a required 2 mm top and bottom bleed (Gelato area, Gelato bleed). Cloudprinter gives 200 x 88 mm (Cloudprinter). Divided out, the ratios are 2.41, 2.14, 2.08 and 2.27.

On the floor: a single master file stretches or crops on at least two of them. Build one file per platform.

Sublimation on cotton: the Sawgrass headline against Sawgrass’s own pages

The Sawgrass homepage is titled “Sublimate on cotton with a sublimation printer by Sawgrass” (Sawgrass). Its Ink Sets page splits the routes: sublimation “using our TruePix paper when pressing on to polyester or polymer coated products”, and cotton “using our self weeding VersiFlex paper” (Sawgrass Ink Sets). The cotton article talks about “the VersiFlex film” bonding (Sawgrass cotton), and the paper is named as “VersiFlex Light Transfer Paper” (Sawgrass blog).

On the floor: “sublimation on cotton” is a film process with its own paper and pressing rules. Ask which paper the job runs on before judging the file.

What fails on the floor

All cases below rest on written descriptions in help centres and maker pages. None of the sources shows the failing file next to the result.

White shows at seams and folds, or black turns grey

Symptom: pale lines at seams on dark AOP; pitch-black reads charcoal. Cause in the file: dark or saturated colour on a white base with no white ink; seams and folds are not printed, so part of this is the product. Printful: white base fabric “may show through slightly at the seams and folds” (Printful); Printify: black may turn “gray/charcoal gray” (Printify); on pre-made items, “minor white streaks or creases” near stitched edges (Printful).

White elements vanish or take the blank’s colour

Cause in the file: white or transparent artwork, which sublimation cannot print. “The color white can’t be printed on all-over print products.” (Printful)

Dull or shifted colour after a CMYK or wide-gamut upload

Cause in the file: CMYK or non-sRGB data converted by the platform or RIP. Printify warns “the colors might shift significantly” (Printify); Printful says wider spaces “can cause unexpected color shifts” (Printful). Not always the file: Sawgrass says greenish blacks are “generally under cooked” (Sawgrass drinkware tips) and expired cartridges cause colour issues (Sawgrass). Run a nozzle check and a press test before blaming the profile.

Blurred small text on mugs

Cause in the file: thin lines or small type at low effective resolution, scaled up to the template. Printify: small text “can blur in the final print, especially on products like mugs” (Printify); Fourthwall: low DPI blurs “especially if the image is scaled up” (Fourthwall).

Unprinted edge or white border on AOP or a mug wrap

Cause in the file: artwork stops short of the template or bleed, a JPEG with an empty area, or an 11 oz Gelato mug file without the 2 mm bleed. Printify: cover “the entire template area” (Printify); Printful: transparent PNG “to avoid white borders” (Printful); Gelato: 2mm top and bottom bleed “is required” (Gelato).

Text or a centred motif lands in the seam or collar

Cause in the file: text across a seam or zip, or a design that needs centred placement on cut-and-sew AOP. Printify says alignment “like in the mockup preview” is not possible across seams and advises against centred designs (Printify).

Pale, patchy print that wipes off a hard good

Cause: an uncoated blank, not the file. Sawgrass: the result is “pale and patchy” because “the dye had nothing to bond to” (Sawgrass).

Reversed image on reverse-side glass

Cause: mirroring left on where the substrate is viewed from the back. Sawgrass: on a glass cutting board “you may need to Turn Mirroring off” (Sawgrass).

Ghosting is a press fault

None of the maker or platform pages read attributes ghosting to the artwork. The one page that names it puts the fix in the press: “Replace blowout paper after each press to avoid ghosting or ink transfer” (Sawgrass).

What shops ask on the forums

All threads below were read as opening posts only; no replies were used.

How do I mirror the file when my printer driver has no mirror option?

Sawgrass Print Utility mirrors by default (Sawgrass: Print Utility settings) and Epson’s F570 driver has a Mirror Image checkbox (Epson: F570 guide (PDF)); no page we read covers a converted consumer printer without one, or flipping a PDF or Canva export.

What size should a full-wrap mug file be, and why do I get a white border or a bad edge by the handle?

The platforms give their own mug templates, e.g. Gelato’s 200x96mm (Gelato: Mug printable area) with a 2 mm top and bottom bleed (Gelato: Drinkware print size); no page we read gives a template for pressing your own blanks or a dead zone beside the handle.

What happens to white and transparent areas on clear acrylic or black satin?

On a dark blank a transparent logo will not show: Sawgrass, for its Siser EasySubli ink, says to press onto “white or light coloured” substrates (Sawgrass: Ink sets) and Printful says white “can’t be printed” (Printful: Printing disclaimers); for clear acrylic, where the white must come from a backing, no maker page we read covers a clear substrate.

Preflight before you upload

  • Canvas matches the template of the platform that prints it, not a generic mug file (Gelato, Redbubble).
  • Pixel dimensions at or above the platform minimum and below its cap: 20,000 × 20,000 px at Printful, 13500 × 13500 at Redbubble (Printful, Redbubble).
  • 300 ppi at print size when the design has text or fine lines; real pixels, not upscaled (Printful, Printify).
  • File size under 100 MB for Printify JPEG/PNG, 200 MB for Printful (Printify, Printful).
  • Format is PNG or JPEG for Redbubble, PDF/X-4 for Cloudprinter (Redbubble, Cloudprinter).
  • Mode RGB, profile sRGB IEC61966-2.1 embedded; no Adobe RGB or ProPhoto tag (Printful).
  • No white artwork that must read as white; every white or transparent area checked against the blank colour (Printful).
  • No soft drop shadows or semi-transparent fades you are not ready to see grainy (Printify).
  • Artwork covers the whole template including bleed; 2 mm top and bottom bleed on a Gelato 11 oz mug (Printify, Gelato).
  • Text and logos sit inside the safe line, and nothing depends on exact placement: Printful’s AOP can shift up to 2 inches in any direction, Printify’s up to 0.5 in (Printful, Printify).
  • Nothing important crosses a seam or zip, and nothing depends on exact centring (Printify).
  • Upload not mirrored for a platform; in your own shop, Mirror on for transfers and off for reverse-side glass (Sawgrass).
  • Blank is white or light polyester, or carries a polymer coating (Sawgrass, Sawgrass Ink Sets).
