How the process treats your file

A mug file is a flat rectangle that wraps a cylinder, so it is sized to the printable band of one product on one platform, not to “a mug”. Gelato gives 200x96mm for its White 11oz Ceramic Mug, Gearment’s 11oz Accent template is 2718 × 1112 px, and Gooten’s mug article gives a 2538x945 px canvas without naming the mug. Three products, two units: the template belongs to the platform and the variant.

Resolution is stated as 300 dpi at print size by Fourthwall, Gooten and Vistaprint. The seam and the handle share one place: on the finished mug the seam sits under the handle, so artwork at either end of the wrap is partly lost.

Colour mode is where the pages differ: Fourthwall says send sRGB and let the software convert, Gooten says design in CMYK but save the PNG or JPG as sRGB, and Vistaprint notes that many printers convert to CMYK and allows RGB. Sublimation press, UV rotary and ceramic decal each get a row of maker figures below; none of those rows is a file spec.

What the printers specify

Mug and tumbler template size: print area and canvas by platform

No single mug canvas exists: read the figure for the product the platform will print, and download its template.

  • Gelato (platform), table of printable areas: White 11oz Ceramic Mug 200x96mm; White 15oz Ceramic Mug 213x103mm; White 12oz Enamel Mug 180x60mm; White 17oz Stainless Steel Water Bottle 87x110mm; White Latte 17oz Ceramic Mug* 208x129mm flat / approx. 204x136mm fitted; White 15oz Stainless Steel Travel Mug* 82x125mm flat / approx. 110x128mm fitted. Starred formats are conical, “so the design file will be morphed from your flat design file when fitted on the tapered product.” — Gelato: Mug printable area
  • Gearment (platform), 11oz Accent Ceramic Mug: “Full 2718 × 1112 px: The design will be printed edge-to-edge across the entire printable area.” The alternative, “Within the 2400 × 975 px area”, leaves a white border at the top and bottom of the mug — Gearment: Mug products
  • Gooten/Sensaria (platform): “create a new canvas with 2538x945 px and 300 dpi”. The product is not named; the article covers Accent Mugs, Black Mugs and Mugs, so the figure is not attributed to an 11oz mug — Gooten: All Mugs
  • Fourthwall (platform): “The 20 oz mug has the widest wrap-around print area.” and “Each mug size has a different printable area.” No pixel sizes on the page; the product designer shows the pixel dimensions for each mug variant — Fourthwall: Mug design best practices
  • 4OVER4 (print shop): “A standard 11 oz mug gives you a set canvas for wrap or single-side designs.” Its table gives full wrap “About 8.5 x 3.5 inches” and single side “About 4 x 3.5 inches”. Another page on the same host gives 3 in, see the disagreement below — 4OVER4: Printable area on an 11 oz mug
  • Ricoma DecoGoods (maker, blank supplier), 11oz ceramic: “Imprint area: 8.5” x 3.5”” — Ricoma: 11 oz sublimation mug

Resolution at print size

Deliver 300 dpi at the actual print size; five sources state 300 (Fourthwall, 4OVER4, Vistaprint, Gooten, and Gearment for its front and back print option) and none sets a lower figure.

  • Fourthwall (platform): “At least 300 dots per inch (DPI) at print size.” — Fourthwall: Mug design best practices
  • 4OVER4 (print shop): “Photos need 300 dpi at print size.” The page is tool-generated (build stamp 2026-10-20), so weigh it below the others — 4OVER4: How to design custom printed mugs
  • Vistaprint (platform): “Prep high-resolution art (aim for 300 ppi at print size) and keep critical text within safe margins.”; “Use 300 ppi at the actual print dimensions.”; a bullet headed “Bigger is fine, upscaling isn’t:” — Vistaprint: How to design custom mugs
  • Gooten (platform): “Choose 300 dpi (resolution).” — Gooten: All Mugs
  • Gearment (platform), Classic Black/White 11oz and 15oz mugs, front/back option on the apparel template: “Artwork size: 4200 × 4800 px | 14 × 16 inches | 300 DPI”. No dpi is given for the edge-to-edge mug templates — Gearment: Mug products
  • Gelato (platform): not stated; the page gives sizes in mm and no dpi — Gelato: Mug printable area

File format

JPG or PNG is what the two platforms that state a format ask for.

Colour mode and embedded profile

Fourthwall and Gooten both name sRGB for the saved file, but Gooten wants the design made in CMYK first; Vistaprint requires no mode and 4OVER4 defers to the product page, so for an unknown printer follow the tool’s own setting.

  • Fourthwall (platform): “Color mode. sRGB.” “The printing software converts to CMYK automatically, so don’t convert it yourself.” Sublimated ink “tends to be darker and less saturated than it appears on a backlit screen.” — Fourthwall: Mug design best practices
  • Gooten (platform): “For best results, design your product in CMYK, but save your PNG/JPG as sRGB.” — Gooten: All Mugs
  • Vistaprint (platform): in “Gather assets”, “color values (CMYK color codes are preferred for printing)”, which is about brand colour values, not the file. In design tips: “Many printers convert to CMYK.” and “Design in RGB if required by the tool, but keep highly saturated neon tones in check, they can dull when converted.” No file colour mode is required — Vistaprint: How to design custom mugs
  • 4OVER4 (print shop): “keep the file in the color mode the product page asks for”; no mode is stated — 4OVER4: How to design custom printed mugs

Transparency and alpha

Use PNG when the artwork has a transparent background; a JPG prints its whole rectangle.

  • Fourthwall (platform): “Use PNG if your artwork has a transparent background” and “A JPG has no transparency, so the whole rectangle, background included, prints.” — Fourthwall: Mug design best practices
  • Gooten (platform): “Save as transparent PNG if the background is white or the same as the mug color.” — Gooten: All Mugs

White handling

No row survived the check for white handling on mugs: no page read states how a white area or a white layer is treated. The one decal statement about base colour sits under the process rows below.

Minimum line and text size

Not stated by any source read. Vistaprint gives only placement, which is under the bleed and safe zone row — Vistaprint: How to design custom mugs

Bleed and safe zone

Gelato wants the background to run off the top and bottom edges with 2 mm bleed on an 11oz ceramic mug. For text the two figures read differently: 4OVER4 puts the safe area “usually a quarter inch inside the edge”, and Vistaprint says to keep text and logos at least 1/8 to 1/4 inch inside the top, bottom and side margins, a minimum rather than a limit. Both fit in one file: background to the bleed, text a quarter inch or more inside the edge.

  • Gelato (platform): “For 11oz ceramic mugs, a standard 2mm bleed on the top and bottom edges of the file is required.” “For most drinkware products, the entire content of the file is used during production.” “The design is expected to run off the top and bottom edges of the mug.” Safe zones only on request via the Partner Manager. For other vessels, no extra bleed should be added, “as the design is printed exactly as provided, without scaling or cropping” — Gelato Connect: Drinkware print size
  • 4OVER4 (print shop): safe area “usually a quarter inch inside the edge”; “background color must extend so trimming never leaves a white sliver.” — 4OVER4: How to design custom printed mugs
  • Gearment (platform), Classic Black/White 11oz and 15oz, edge-to-edge option: “Keep important text and design elements within the safe area to avoid being cut off.” No dimension is given — Gearment: Mug products
  • Gooten (platform): “Keep important design elements like text within the safe area”; no dimension — Gooten: All Mugs
  • Vistaprint (platform): keep important text or logos at least 1/8 to 1/4 inch inside the top, bottom and side margins, and in the FAQ, leave a margin of at least 1/8 to 1/4 inch inside all edges (paraphrased: the page writes both fractions as single characters); “avoid placing critical content across the seam.” — Vistaprint: How to design custom mugs

Wrap seam, handle zone and left- or right-handed use

Keep the full message inside each side panel, away from the handle zones, and expect the seam to sit under the handle.

  • 4OVER4 (print shop): “The handle eats both ends of the wrap.” and “on the finished mug that seam sits under the handle.” Advice: “put the full message in each side panel, keep it out of the handle zones” and “Repeat the message on both panels so the mug works in either hand” — 4OVER4: How to design custom printed mugs
  • 4OVER4 (print shop), FAQ: “Always download the exact template before designing, since handle placement and the wrap gap vary slightly by mug.” — 4OVER4: Printable area on an 11 oz mug
  • Vistaprint (platform): “Most full-wrap prints meet near the handle.” “Avoid placing faces, intricate patterns or vertical lines right at the seam.” “check alignment near the handle, tiny shifts are most noticeable there.” — Vistaprint: How to design custom mugs

Process rows: sublimation press, UV rotary and ceramic decal

These are the maker-side numbers read for the three ways a mug gets its image; none is a file spec.

  • Ricoma DecoGoods (blank supplier), sublimation press: “Temperature: 375°F to 400°F”; “Pressing time: 180-240 seconds (3-4 minutes)”; “Pressure: Medium”. — Ricoma: 11 oz sublimation mug
  • Mimaki (maker), UV: Kebab MkII for UJF-3042 MkII and Kebab MkII L for UJF-6042 MkII and UJF-7151 plus, press release of 12 December 2016: “diameters from 10 mm to 110 mm”; “When diameter is less than 64mm, use a suction table.”; the LH-100 and PR-200 pairing is called “an excellent choice for printing on glass”. The word “mug” does not appear — Mimaki Europe: Kebab option for the MkII family
  • eufyMake (maker, consumer UV), on a reseller page, not the maker’s: “supports diameters from 2-4 inches and lengths up to 13 inches”, while the kit section of the same page says “Supported Printing Diameter: 1.57” x 3.93” (40 - 100 mm).” — Swing Design: eufyMake rotary attachment
  • Milestone Decals (maker), decal firing: “Milestone decals are generally applied as a third firing on an already fired glaze.” and “The decals should be fired very slowly below 500°F (260°C)”. The PDF lists a “Digital Food Safe Decal Firing CONE 019” schedule and says nothing on mirroring or file specs — Milestone Decals: Ceramic firing instructions (PDF)
  • Milestone Decals (maker), substrate, not file white data: “The non metallic decals are somewhat translucent. To help keep their density, it is best to: use them on white or light colors.” — Milestone Decals: Ceramic firing instructions (PDF)

Where the sources disagree

4OVER4: 11 oz wrap height 3.5 in or 3 in

One print shop gives two heights for one product. The FAQ’s table gives the full wrap as “About 8.5 x 3.5 inches” (4OVER4 FAQ). Another page on the same host says “The 11 oz Mug has an 8.5” x 3” print area and the 15 oz Mug has 9” x 4”” (4OVER4 help page). Ricoma’s blank states 8.5” x 3.5” (Ricoma).

On the floor: a file sized to 3.5 in is cropped or scaled by half an inch if production uses 3 in. Both 4OVER4 pages are machine-generated (stamped 2026-10-20), so treat the figure as unconfirmed until the shop’s own template is in hand.

What fails on the floor

No documented case with a file and its result was found for drinkware. The sources read give advice, not cases: what they say about the handle zones and the seam is in the wrap seam row above, with its links.

What shops ask on the forums

Four file questions came up in at least two threads since 2024. The first two come from r/Sublimation, from people pressing their own mugs and tumblers; the last two come from sellers on a platform’s mug template (r/Printify, and Cricut’s template in one thread). The quotes are the askers’ opening posts; replies are not used. Questions about presses, ovens, ink, paper and blanks were asked far more often and are left out as not file-side. A scan of the Dye Sublimation board titles on T-Shirt Forums turned up no thread on mug file setup.

“How do I design a full wrap around the seam and the handle?”

“Just wondering if there is a minimum distance from the handle you need to work within?” — Forum: Mug Sublimation issue., January 2025. The asker says the side edges by the handle print wrong on full wraps and doubts either the template sizing or the press. Also asked in Forum: coffee mugs, October 2025: “I want know how to soften the edges by the mug handle.” And in Forum: Seam help, August 2024, about tumblers: “Does anyone have any advice on how to blend the design ends to achieve the right look?”

What our sources say: 4OVER4 says the handle covers both ends of the wrap and the seam sits under it, so put the full message in each side panel, keep it out of the handle zones and repeat it on both panels, and download the exact template because handle placement and wrap gap vary by mug (4OVER4, 4OVER4 FAQ). Vistaprint says full wraps meet near the handle and to avoid faces, intricate patterns and vertical lines at the seam, where small shifts show most (Vistaprint). None of our sources gives a distance from the handle, a gap or overlap figure for a wrap, or a method to blend the two ends.

“How do I make the file for a tapered tumbler or mug: do I warp the image?”

“what about the decrease down to the skinnier part of the tumbler? How would I go about creating a template for that” — Forum: Questions about creating a sublimation template for this tumbler, July 2026. Also asked in Forum: Warping designs to make tapered tumblers?, December 2025: “I already have the template for the tapered tumbler, but should I be warping my image or should I not modify it” In Forum: Help! How do I get my design not to wrinkle and fit correctly when I’m wrapping it on a tapered travel coffee mug blank from Michaels?, May 2025: “I keep getting wrinkles in the pattern or it doesn’t fit tight enough in areas when I’m taping them.” And in Forum: Is sublimating a full 40oz tumbler possible?, February 2025: “if it’s even possible to sublimate an entire 40oz tumbler with one big photo”.

What our sources say: Gelato lists its two conical formats as a flat size and a fitted size (White Latte 17oz Ceramic Mug 208x129mm flat, about 204x136mm fitted; White 15oz Stainless Steel Travel Mug 82x125mm flat, about 110x128mm fitted) and says the design file is morphed from the flat file when fitted on the tapered product (Gelato). That is a platform doing the warping. None of our sources says whether to warp a file for a tapered blank pressed in a shop, gives a template for one, or says whether one full-wrap image fits a tapered tumbler. The wrinkles in the third thread come from wrapping and pressing, which these sources do not cover.

“What does a mug template’s print area really print, and can the artwork run edge to edge?”

“I’m still wondering how the bleed area (the grey area outside the dashed green box) is handled.” — Forum: Actual safe print area for mug template?, February 2024. Also asked in Forum: First introduction to sublimation printing, December 2024: “when I auto scale it I end up with a white border at the top and bottom”. That asker’s Cricut Design Space mug template says the image is too large.

What our sources say: on Gearment’s 11oz Accent mug the full 2718 × 1112 px file prints edge to edge, and the 2400 × 975 px area leaves a white border at the top and bottom (Gearment). Gelato requires 2 mm of bleed on the top and bottom edges of an 11oz ceramic mug, uses the whole file in production and expects the design to run off the top and bottom edges (Gelato Connect). None of our sources covers Printify’s template, whose grey area the first asker asks about, or Cricut’s.

“Is my mug design really centred, or does the template or the mockup decide?”

“I want to trust that the design canvas is accurate” — Forum: Center Aligned Design - Is it actually centered on the mug?, December 2024. Also asked in Forum: Issues with black mugs, March 2024: “I am not sure where to place the graphics to consistently have them centered”. That asker’s sample from one print provider came out off centre although the artwork was centred on the template.

What our sources say: 4OVER4 says to download the exact template before designing, because handle placement and the wrap gap vary slightly by mug (4OVER4 FAQ). The canvas for each product is the platform’s own figure: 200x96mm for Gelato’s 11oz ceramic mug, 2718 × 1112 px for Gearment’s 11oz Accent, 2538x945 px at Gooten (Gelato, Gearment, Gooten). None of our sources says whether a platform’s design canvas or its mockup is the reference for centring, or how far a printed design can sit from the template’s centre.

Preflight before you upload

  • Build to the template of the platform and the exact product that will print it: sizes differ by platform and variant (Gelato, Gearment, Gooten).
  • Download the exact template first; handle placement and the wrap gap vary by mug (4OVER4).
  • On a conical Gelato format, supply the flat file; Gelato morphs it onto the taper (Gelato).
  • On a Gearment Accent mug, choose the full 2718 × 1112 px edge-to-edge file or the 2400 × 975 px file with a white border top and bottom (Gearment).
  • 300 dpi at the actual print dimensions, from real pixels, not upscaled (Fourthwall, Vistaprint).
  • JPG or PNG (Fourthwall, Gooten).
  • PNG when the background is transparent; a JPG prints the whole rectangle (Fourthwall).
  • Colour mode as the platform’s tool asks; on Fourthwall, sRGB and no CMYK conversion of your own; on Gooten, design in CMYK and save the PNG or JPG as sRGB (Gooten, Fourthwall, Vistaprint).
  • Expect sublimated colour darker and less saturated than the screen; check saturated neons (Fourthwall, Vistaprint).
  • Background runs to the bleed: 2 mm top and bottom on a Gelato 11oz ceramic mug (Gelato Connect, 4OVER4).
  • Text and logos inside the safe area: at least 1/8 to 1/4 inch inside the edges at Vistaprint, usually a quarter inch at 4OVER4 (Vistaprint, 4OVER4).
  • Nothing important in the handle zones; the full message repeated on both side panels (4OVER4).
  • No faces, intricate patterns or vertical lines at the seam (Vistaprint).
  • For ceramic decals, a white or light substrate to keep density (Milestone Decals).
