PDF/X-4.
the print-exchange PDF that keeps live transparency and names its printing condition
A restricted kind of PDF made for handing print-ready files between companies: fonts embedded, an output intent that names the printing condition, and transparency allowed to stay live. In print-on-demand it is the PDF route, not the default upload. Gelato asks for PDF/X-4 with output intent GRACoL 2006, a format it says supports both sRGB and CMYK objects, and Cloudprinter's mug guide says to save the file in PDF/X-4. Elsewhere a PDF is a risk rather than a standard: Printful warns that PDFs can carry hidden layers, blend modes and transparency effects that render differently in production and asks for them flattened, and Redbubble says PDF files won't work correctly. A layout exported with a generic PDF preset looks the same on screen and leaves the colour conversion to whoever opens it next.
